Blog #1 Upper Control Arm FAQ Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

WHAT COATING DOES JBA USE ON ITS STEEL A-ARMS?

One of the first things most will notice about JBA Offroad’s upper control arms is their distinctive and durable finish. That’s the result of our steel A-arms being coated with Tiger Drylac Bengal Red, a top-notch powder coating that’s as long-lasting as it is visually stunning.

The coating process begins with media blasting to prepare the surface, followed by chemical etching with iron phosphate. This creates a base for the coating to adhere to.

Next, a zinc-rich epoxy primer is applied, which provides corrosion resistance. The final topcoat is then added, and the entire product is cured at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rest assured: Before the control arms make their way to you, they undergo a rigorous visual inspection to guarantee they meet JBA’s high standards of quality.

WHY DOES JBA NOT RECOMMEND STRUT SPACER LIFT KITS?

When considering a lift kit for your vehicle, it’s important to prioritize performance and safety. Strut spacer lift kits might seem appealing due to their low cost and straightforward installation, but they come with several significant drawbacks.

JBA Offroad advises against these kits for the following reasons:

  • Strut spacers restrict the full range of your vehicle’s suspension travel, negatively affecting performance and ride quality.
  • They compromise your vehicle’s handling, making it less stable and responsive on rough terrain.

For a better alternative, we recommend upgrading to Bilstein 5100 struts paired with JBA upper control arms. This combination provides the lift you need and supports your vehicle’s long-lasting performance, allowing you to tackle tough terrains with confidence.

HOW LONG SHOULD MY BALL JOINT LAST?

Ball joints endure a lot of stress, especially when you’re navigating tough trails, so their lifespan largely hinges on your driving conditions and how well you maintain them. To ensure your ball joints last as long as possible, you’ll want to maintain a regular greasing schedule with high-quality automotive grease.

For added peace of mind, JBA Offroad offers a one-year warranty on your purchase.

WHY DO I NEED AN ESP RESET AFTER A FRONT-END ALIGNMENT?

After a front-end alignment, you might be surprised to find that your vehicle’s electronic stability program (ESP) requires a reset. Why is this necessary? The ESP relies on accurate information from your steering angle sensor, which can be affected by changes in toe alignment during an adjustment.

To ensure your ESP system functions correctly, a reset synchronizes the steering angle sensor with the new alignment settings. This is particularly important for vehicles equipped with ESP, which includes all 2012+ U.S. vehicles and 2006+ Jeeps. In some cases, a reset can be as simple as disconnecting the battery, but certain vehicles may require specialized dealership tools.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN INDEPENDENT FRONT SUSPENSION AND SOLID AXLE SUSPENSION?

Choosing between independent front suspension (IFS) and solid axle suspension can be a tough decision, especially when both have distinct advantages depending on your off-roading needs. Here’s a comparison to help you decide:

Independent Front Suspension

  • Movement: Allows each wheel to move independently, offering a smoother and more comfortable ride
  • Shock absorption: Excels at absorbing shocks and reducing the impact transferred to the vehicle for a better ride on rugged terrains
  • Comfort: Preferred for those who prioritize comfort and smooth handling
  • Complexity and cost: Generally more complex and expensive to repair and maintain

Solid Axle Suspension

  • Movement: Connects wheels with a solid beam so they are both affected by bumps or obstacles simultaneously
  • Durability: Offers durability and cost-effectiveness; ideal for larger or more rugged vehicles
  • Ride quality: Provides a rougher ride compared to IFS but is better suited to withstand harsh off-road conditions
  • Simplicity and maintenance: Simpler design typically means lower repair and maintenance costs
